Maternal Serum Alpha-fetoprotein Levels During Pregnancy

Abstract
Eletated and low levels of maternal serum AFP in midtrimester of pregnancy have been related with fetal anomalies as open neural tube defects, hydrocephalus etc. and some chromosomal abnormal ties.
In order to establish the normal ranges of AFP in the maternal serum and use to basic screening program for detection of fetal anomalies, serum AFP concentrations were studied in 264 pregnant women who visited the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Chung - Ang Univ. Hospital during the period through June, 1987 to Feb., 1990
The groups of the study were selected randomly at gestational ages from 8 to 42 weeks. Maternal serum AFP levels were obtained by radioimmunoassay.(ABBOTT Alpha FETO. RIABEAD)
The results were as follows:
1. Maternal serum AFP levels showed progressively an increasing trend from 13 weeks gestation to 28 weeks gestation.
2. Maternal serum AFP levels showed rapidly an increasing trend from 28 weeks gestation at 35 weeks gestation and the peak of maternal serum AFP levels was at 34 weeks gesation(291.8ng/ml)
3. paternal serum AFP levels showed rapidly decreasing at 35 weeks gestation and then .rogressively showed a decreasing trend to 42 week.
4. Paternal serum AFP assay should be determined during the midtrimester pregnancy especially prior to 24 weeks gestation.
Authors consider that maternal serum AFP measurement would be helpful in detection of fetal anomalies during midtrimester pregnancy(especially 16 -24week) and it indeed should be included as r,)Utine prenatal screening method in our country.
